Trinity College: The Backs: snowdrops
Snowdrops (Galanthus) are some of the first spring bulbs
to open. This is a picture of some snowdrops that have already
flowered on 1 January. This is fairly early to see such
flowers, but this particular clump is located in a sheltered
south-facing area of the Trinity Backs.
There is much worry about so-called global
warming, and one might take early flowering of spring bulbs as
evidence of such warming. However in the recent past there
have been equally strong
worries about the next ice age. Scientific models of the
atmosphere of the Earth, as for most complex dynamical systems,
are woefully simplistic, but the output
from these models is taken to be scientific fact. There is no
doubt that the human species impacts the environment, but
simplistic analyses could actually make the situation worse.
