Cambridge 2000: Brooklands Avenue: Government Buildings
Description: Brooklands Avenue: Government Buildings |
Date built: c1950 |
A large (circa 30 acre, 12 hectare) tract of land on
Brooklands Avenue contained a complex of (national) government
buildings, it was hard to imagine a worse public display,
and it was an appalling waste of land.
The site was only visited by most people because the driver's
test in Cambridge started from here, but the Inland Revenue was
also located in several of the buildings. There was a
national-administered
nuclear bunker
located on one corner of the site.
(Shire Hall
had a series of local-administered bunkers since 1939.)
After the opening of the
new government offices
these fifty-year old "temporary" buildings were demolished in
mid-2003 and the site was
re-developed
to be mainly residential.
