Cambridge 2000: Brooklands Avenue: Brooklands, 24
| Description: Brooklands Avenue: Brooklands, 24 |
| Date built: c1825 |
The original house in this area of the city,
the property extended all the
way from Hills Road to Trumpington Road.
There was a lodge
at either end, the one on Hills Road was demolished early
in the 20th century but
the one
on Trumpington Road still exists in the grounds of the Botanic
Garden.
The house itself is not very impressive from the outside
but has wonderful oak features on the ground floor, dating
from the early 20th century.
The first owner,
Richard Foster, founded Fosters' Bank with his brother,
Ebenezer, who lived in the much grander residence of
Anstey Hall
in Trumpington. Their name still appears over the doorway
of the
Lloyds TSB bank
in the centre of Cambridge.
Currently the house is occupied by English Heritage.
They had
an extension
added in 2002.
