A beloved local institution for over a century, in the 21st century
their situation became more and more perilous because local
and central government purposefully made city traffic worse and
worse.
The main shop closed on 20 December 2025 and then moved to
Nuffield Road in the north of the city, not far from the A14,
but still somewhat difficult to access, and further from many
potential customers in the city.
Apparently both
Ludwig Wittgenstein
and
Stephen Hawking
were customers at the shop on East Road.
