The original
Laboratory for Molecular Biology
(LMB) has been overcrowded and with non-ideal lab space for many years.
This new building will allow a slight increase in numbers of research
scientists, with vastly improved facilities. Hopefully the pioneering
spirit of the old LMB will not be lost in the move.
The shape of the building (seen from above) is allegedly reminiscent of
a chromosome, with a large central atrium. The old LMB has a cafeteria
at the top, with great views over the city, and, as can be seen in the
photo, the new building also has a restaurant at the top, with a roof
terrace with views towards the south and west.
The building was paid for out of some of the royalties of antibody-related
work carried out at the old LMB.
This is the first building on the Addenbrooke's site on the west side of
Robinson Way. It is located right next to the railway line, and hopefully
vibrations from that will not cause any problems for experiments. This
