Cambridge 2000: Auckland Road: Hairy House, 16
This was built on the back garden of 23 Newmarket Road, which had a
garage at the far end (the right in the photo, where the new brick is).
The plot is tiny, around 80 m2. The house is partly sunk into the
ground in order to reduce the overall profile. There were strict
planning requirements on windows so much of the daylight instead
comes from five roof lights. And they managed to squeeze three
bedrooms into the house. The roof has plants growing on it, hence
the "hairy" in the name of the house.
