November 2001
Ever since Bridge Street has been closed to most vehicular traffic the local government has been tinkering with this intersection. This is the latest "improvement" from the summer of 2001. Cyclists turning right onto St John's Street face a stark choice, either go left of the sign, straight into a section of road which is one-way the wrong way, or go right of the sign, which also goes against the usual rules of the road. This lack of a good choice is clearly dangerous. There is no problem when there is no traffic (see picture on left) but as soon as there is any traffic (see picture on right) the situation becomes dangerous. It is particularly bad because many vehicles coming head on do not turn right (to the left in the pictures) but instead continue straight on.
[ The sign also bizarrely proclaims "Pedestrian Zone ENDS" but this is a complete corruption of the English language by local government since motorised vehicles and cycles are allowed on the road. What the sign should say is "No Private Cars (except for Taxis and Access) Zone ENDS". ]
