Cambridge Transport Follies: Elizabeth Way - Chesterton Road roundabout

November 2001

This used to be a well-designed roundabout, with gently sloping curves. In the summer of 2001 the roundabout was butchered by the local government, making it much more dangerous. As an example of what was done, the picture just below shows a triangle of asphalt which was added. There are two cars about to enter the roundabout. The one in the left lane (i.e. on the right in the picture) is being forced into the path of the one in the right lane. The picture at the bottom shows that cars in the left lane end up right in the middle of the roundabout, dangerously squeezing the other lane of traffic. No doubt the transport planners think that people can (will) defy the laws of gravity and follow the road markings. They are wrong. The bottom picture also shows a cyclist who is not turning left and so is on the car side of the triangle. The roundabout is now (more) dangerous for such cyclists as well.
