Although physics was the most important science of the 20th century, biology is the most important in the 21st century. Physicists have contributed much to biology in the past (e.g. Crick and Watson were in the Cavendish Laboratory) and the opening of this building is an indication that more and more physicists are likely to work in areas of biological interest in future.

The south-facing side of the building (the right-hand part in the photo) has hardly any windows. The west-facing side is almost all glazed, hence the introduction of the large brise-soleils (although it is generally not that sunny in the afternoons in Cambridge, and that side of the building is just a corridor). The east-facing side has far fewer windows, and has no brise-soleils.

There is a lounge in the protuding part of the building above the entrance.
