Cambridge 2000: Huntingdon Road: NIAB (National Institute of Agricultural Botany)
Description: Huntingdon Road: NIAB (National Institute of Agricultural Botany) |
Date built: 1921 |
Architect: P. Morley Horder |
A charming building, with a not so charming (but fairly
typical) 1960s extension at the back. Behind the 1960s
block is a 1983 library designed by
David Yandell,
who was working for Bidwells at the time.
NIAB is concerned with seed testing, and as a result had extensive
land behind. Once upon a time, it was far removed from city life, but in time
housing spread all the way to its boundary, and most of its own land,
and other
nearby agricultural land,
is being converted to housing.
In 2020, NIAB moved to
another nearby site,
and in 2021-2022 this original building was converted to flats.
