Cambridge 2000: university: Madingley Road: Greenwich House
university: Madingley Road: Greenwich House
This was home to the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO) from 1990
to 1998. It was built specifically for them, after an enforced move
from Herstmonceux in Sussex. In 1998 the research council closed
the facility down. (So the move to Cambridge was rather pointless
and a waste of money.) The building itself is undistinguished and
since then has been part used by the university and part used by
some hi-tech companies. The RGO lives on in name as part of the
National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, which is where it started
life in 1675.
