Great St Mary's is known as the university church. It is mainly known now for its tower, which is open to the public and provides good views of the centre of the city.
Distance in Cambridge used to be measured relative to this church, as is witnessed by distance markers, so this can be considered to be the centre of Cambridge.
Students are still required during full term to live within 3 miles (5 km) of the church, and university officers within 20 miles (32 km) unless granted explicit permission otherwise.
The Cambridge market is on the east side of the building (to the right, in the photograph).
