Cambridge 2000: Botanic Garden: north-west corner
Description: Botanic Garden: north-west corner: Wing Nut tree |
This Wing Nut tree (Pterocarya fraxinifolia) is one
of the biggest trees in Cambridge (more than 30m high and
more than 10m wide). There were actually two trees here
but one blew down in 1886 and the larger part of what
is seen here are the suckers which grew from the root of
that tree. The second tree was lost at some point.
In February 2005 four of the big trunks were removed.
In early 2021, the remaining trunks were severely pruned
because of wood decay caused by
Ganoderma applanatum and Laetiporus sulphureus
fungi.
